Ever since moving to Warwick almost 2 years ago (jeez hasn’t that gone fast?!) it wasn’t until late this year that I visited Stratford Upon Avon. It’s a stone’s throw away from Leamington Spa, but due to lack of a car, I had no real way of getting there.
After visiting Stratford on my first date with my new partner, I’ve had a little soft spot for the place and we quite frequently take a little wander down there in the evenings or lazy weekends. So when The Encore pub asked me to head down and try the new menu after a complete refurb, I was more than excited to find a new favourite restaurant with my new favourite person.
We’d actually walked past The Encore pub many times on our wanders around Stratford, so we knew the place already. Upon arrival we were greeted by a Gin bar and canapes, where I was busy scoffing the most amazing mini fish cakes and falling in love with Beetroot hummus, who knew this would make an amazing combo! (Must remember to try making this at home!).
After sitting and enjoying the music and atmosphere along with the very modern and very Tarnya decor, we ventured upstairs to take our seats and deliberate over the varied menu. During this time I asked for a cocktail that wasn’t on the cocktail menu, the bar man was extremely happy to accommodate my request and made me possibly the best amaretto sour I’ve ever had, which led to me ordering 3 more throughout the night…but tipsy Tarnya is for another story time.
For starters, Chris and I decided to try the Crispy Karaage Chicken that comes with Katsu sauce and the Sweet Chilli King Prawn Roll, both were lovely. The Prawn roll was a cold dish and had I realised this, probably would have ordered something hot, but that’s no reflection on the quality of the meal!
For our main, Chris ordered a medium rare steak with chips and beef dripping sauce (probably the best decision we’ve ever made) which arrived perfectly cooked, whilst I ordered the Battered Halloumi. Although we were pretty much stuffed already by this point, the beef dripping sauce was beyond tasty and we spent most of the evening dipping everything in sight in it, including some bread they kindly bought over for us (aka we looked like we were enjoying it a little too much).
For our desserts (yep, there’s a special second stomach for that!) we ordered the New York style Cheesecake, because cheesecake. Then I decided to order the Melting chocolate and peanut bomb, which I didn’t realise at the time was one of those fancy, pour stuff on it whilst it melts style puddings, which when you’re 4 cocktails deep. getting a great photo is um, tricky. But you’ll be glad to know that they both also tasted amazing, even for a dessert snob like me. I really wish I could have tried more of the desserts but I was well and truly stuffed.
We were both really impressed by the food we had and not just because we were there as guests. The food was really good quality for a very reasonable price tag. The portions were generous and the flavours were wonderful. We’ll certainly be heading back there again in the future. We often meet family for lunch in Stratford so we’ll be 100% taking them here and trying more of the menu, indulging in 3 pots of beef dripping and as many cocktails as I can handle, (spoiler alert: it’s about 2).

*The evening was very kindly gifted to us by The Encore restaurant, however they have not influenced my opinion in the slightest. I would never recommend a product or experience I didn’t like to my readers, so you can guarantee all thoughts, views and lame jokes are always my own.
