Another year over far too quickly or am I just getting old? Anyway, it’s the time of year of reflection and I’ve chosen to reflect on all of my favourite entertainment from 2017. Some will be stereotypical and predictable but a few definitely caught me off guard. So lets delve in!
I actually didn’t watch as many new things as I would have liked this year, I spent a lot of time aimlessly watching repeats of my favourites whilst I worked on writing for my blog or painting for my shop. However there were a few things I watched from recommendations that completely caught me of guard and became my absolutely-completely-obsessed-with-favourite entertainment of the year.
I honestly wasn’t interested in this when I saw adverts floating around for it, I mean, it came out in 2016 and I didn’t watch it till 2017… But I decided to give in and give it ago after listening to 230948 people talk about it on the film/tv podcasts I listen to. I was completely blown away. Not only is the plot interesting, the actors and actresses are spectacular and the tension is awesome. I watched through all 10 episodes in about 3 days and then sat and watched the entire thing again after convincing Nick to watch them too, and I think it was even better the second time. I’m so hyped for season 2, I cannot wait.
Big Little Lies.
I feel like I recommend this to everyone who will listen. It took me by surprise but in such a good way! The description for this is completely wrong and gives the wrong impression for it. It basically makes out that these are 4 married women who live very rich, entitled lives with generic ‘rich girl’ problems. However this couldn’t be more wrong. It’s beautifully filmed, with rich deep characters that are just wonderful. It takes on topics around motherhood, rape and domestic violence with sensitivity. It’s also only 7 episodes long, which is a perfect amount and stopped where it should without dragging it out. I read there is a season 2 being filmed, which makes me very skeptical as it would have been perfect as a stand alone series but I’ll watch it and give it a chance and hope it’s as good as the first season.
Game of Thrones Season 7.
Ahhh GoT, our trusty old favourite. If I’m honest, when I was anticipating season 7 I was expecting it to go downhill like most long running shows however I was so far off the mark with this one. GoT is one of those incredibly lucky shows that as it’s gained popularity it’s gained budget, meaning the depth and plot has gotten even better. The drama, the twists and the scale of the special effects have gotten bigger and better and I honestly re-watched every episode at least twice and got sucked into the whole thing. I can’t wait for the final season and to finally find out what the hell happens to all those clashing characters.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
I was gifted this book for Christmas last year after it caught my eye on Amazon. I had been in a bit of a reading slump and was desperately to fall back in love with reading and this book was the one to do it. There was something about the combination of magic, the circus and love that made me fall in love with reading once again. It’s a wonderful book and I highly recommend it!
The Adam Buxton Podcast.
Ever since I got into podcasts I continually return to this one. It doesn’t matter if I’ve never even heard of the guest Adam is interviewing, he’s so endearing and funny I always have fun learning about someone new. If I’m up to date and find myself wondering what to listen to, I always go back to earlier podcast episodes to re-listen. I’m especially fond of the Louis Theroux episodes as they’re always so interesting and random.
I can’t believe I’d gone over a year before ever playing Overwatch, I guess working in the games industry sometimes kills your passion for gaming outside of work, however I finally gave in and bought Overwatch to play with Nick a couple of months ago and I’ve been loving playing it. It’s such an easy game to pop on for an hour and not have to be so committed to, which is the perfect game for me!
I couldn’t write this post without giving some honorable entertainment mentions to Stranger Things (5 reasons why you should watch it), The Crown, Mind Hunter, Beauty and the Beast and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
What were your entertainment highlights over the past year? Please let me know in the comments so I can watch/read/listen to them too! You can also read about the entertainment things I’ve been disappointed with this year too, as it’s not all good is it? hah!
